scraps

scraps

there is this cartoon I've seen sometimes:

illustration by Karl Jilg for the Swedish Road Administration1,2

it highlights the space we cede to cars, and the dangers we normalize

I often think of this image, when confronted with the dissonance between what you are supposed to do to get around, and what feels reasonable

bike lane; chasm; place to park bike

you see people's fear of losing their scraps of space

“you shouldn’t be riding on the sidewalk!” (inspired by true events)

seeing this cartoon, I'd always imagined a zoomed-out version

it might highlight our isolation more

and our relationship with the places we want to go

seeing things this way, you just want to fill in the gaps

  1. it's unclear (to me) where the original source is. Many people cite "This Brilliant Illustration Shows How Much Public Space We've Surrendered to Cars" (Vox), 2014.
  2. Jilg's sidewalk is a good discussion by someone who did more research: suggesting that the illustration is meant to "turn the kinetic energy of a moving car into a height to show the consequences of simple human mistakes in the road system."
